Privacy Policy for OpenTrans AI

Last Updated: May 14, 2026

At OpenTrans AI, we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our Chrome Extension or visit our website.

Operator & Data Controller

OpenTrans AI is operated by the OpenTrans AI team ("we", "us", "our"), the data controller for personal information described in this policy. Our official website is https://getopentrans.com.

Privacy inquiries: support@getopentrans.com

OpenTrans AI is local-first: AI writing and grammar features process your text on your device. We do not upload the content you process through those features to our servers. Account, diagnostic, and optional feedback data are handled separately as described below.

1. Overview: Our "Privacy-First" Commitment

Unlike traditional AI assistants, OpenTrans AI is built on a Local-First architecture. We leverage Google Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano) to process your text directly on your device.

For those AI features, your draft text is processed locally in your browser and is not transmitted to OpenTrans servers for inference. We do not use your writing content to train models.

2. Information We Collect

To provide and maintain our service, we collect a minimal amount of information:

A. Account Information

When you sign in via Google OAuth or Email, we store the following basic details in our secure database (provided by Supabase):

  • Email Address: To identify your account and sync settings.
  • Basic Profile Info: Name and profile picture (if provided by Google).
  • Extension Preferences: Settings synced to your account (e.g., preferred language, theme, feature toggles).

B. Usage & Diagnostic Data (Telemetry)

To improve reliability and performance, the extension may send operational events to our backend (Supabase). These events do not include the text you write or process.

  • Event types: installation, AI environment checks, successful/failed AI operations, and similar product events.
  • Metadata may include: extension version, platform/user-agent summary, feature used (e.g., grammar, AI write), approximate character counts or durations, error codes, and your account ID when signed in.
  • Purpose: product analytics, debugging, and service quality—not advertising profiling.

C. Feedback You Submit

If you voluntarily submit feedback through the extension or website, we collect what you choose to send, such as:

  • Your message content, feedback category, optional contact email, extension version, and the active page URL at submission time.
  • Technical context to help us diagnose issues (e.g., browser info and on-device AI readiness status)—not your processed writing.
  • Feedback is stored on our servers to respond to you and fix issues. Do not include passwords or highly sensitive secrets in feedback.

D. Website Visit Data

When you browse our website, standard web logs and privacy-friendly analytics (e.g., page performance metrics) may be processed by our hosting providers. This does not include text you process in the extension.

3. How We Process Your Data

A. Local AI Processing (No Cloud Transmission)

OpenTrans AI uses the Chrome Built-in AI API.

  • Zero-Server Text Processing: All grammar checks, rewrites, and translations are performed locally in your browser.
  • No Data Training: Because your text is never sent to our servers for AI inference, it is never used to train our AI models or any third-party models.

B. Backend Storage (Supabase)

We use Supabase (a secure PostgreSQL-based service) to store your account profile, user preferences, telemetry events, and feedback submissions. Supabase is compliant with industry-standard security protocols.

4. Third-Party Services

We use a few trusted partners to make OpenTrans AI work:

  • Google Auth: For secure sign-in.
  • Supabase: For account management, preference storage, telemetry, and feedback.
  • Google Chrome AI Runtime: The local engine that powers our AI features.

These services have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

You have full control over your data:

  • Data Access: You can view your account information within the extension settings.
  • Account Deletion: You can request to delete your account at any time by contacting us at support@getopentrans.com. Upon deletion, all your personal information (email, preferences) will be permanently erased from our Supabase database.

6. Security

We implement robust security measures, including HTTPS encryption and Supabase Row-Level Security (RLS), to protect your account data. However, please remember that no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

7. Regional Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights regarding your personal information.

  • EEA/UK (GDPR): You may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or portability of personal data we hold, and object to certain processing. Legal bases include contract performance (account), legitimate interests (security and product improvement), and consent where applicable.
  • California (CCPA/CPRA): California residents may request disclosure of categories collected, deletion, and correction. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • To exercise these rights, email support@getopentrans.com. We will respond within applicable legal timeframes.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
